Lights and Lines
Each day we are surrounded by the built environment within which we work, shop, sleep, eat, seek entertainment, and pursue all of the other activities of daily life. Because our lives are busy and our time and energy are not limitless, we learn to prioritize what we pay attention to – what we “see” as we go through each day. Most often we see buildings and the things in them primarily as functional items. But the structures and the products that humans build and use can also been seen as objects that reflect the beauty and forms of the world around us.
There are shapes and colors, lines and angles, shadows and light -- endless variety to be found in each object and each moment, so that everywhere you look there is something new to see, or something to be seen in a new way.
The images in this album represent some of those moments, when there is a quality of light, a juxtaposition of lines, a surprising perspective if you just flip the view upside down, a change of mood if you envision a slight shift in color or shape. Their subjects might be surprising – a pairing of photographs of buildings and light fixtures may seem an odd combination. We’re accustomed to seeing and exploring architecture as an art; we’re much less inclined to see a fluorescent light fixture or a lamp in a furniture store as artistic. But buildings and the sources of light within them each draw my eye and my imagination, and I enjoy the process of capturing and portraying them from a new perspective.
Some of the images presented here invite you to take a step back and focus on the interplay of the light and the lines of the entire object/subject. Others invite you to come a few steps closer, to look at the structure within the structure, finding interest in the interactions of light, color and shape in one component of the object. Looking beyond the basics of form and function, these photographs explore the lights and lines of our built environment with a new eye and a bit of whimsy.
