Tom Laffey's Artist Statement

I have been photographing regularly since 1972. I attended Art Center College of Design for a time in the late 70’s but am otherwise largely self-taught as a photographer. After Art Center, I worked in several Hollywood photo labs for about 12 years doing color lab work for commercial photographers while pursuing my own photography in both black & white and color. These days my day to day work is in computer engineering. I continue my photography as a means of creative expression and exploration.

I work with several motifs, favoring historical, industrial and modern architecture, landscapes of the West and occasionally graphic abstractions. In the landscape, I often photograph vistas with rocks, sand and deciduous trees, signifying long lasting durability as well as striving, youthfulness, fragility and impermanence. In architectural photographs, I often emphasize a graphic look with a historical texture, developing a sense of place and recognizing the imposition of man's will as well as the effects of time.

In recent years, the accuracy and control provided by digital photography has advanced past the capability of many earlier photographic processes. I take advantage of this capability in my work. Working digitally allows me to use panoramic and "high dynamic range" techniques that were not possible in my darkroom days. I like the expanded sense of space and color that these methods add to my photographic expression.

Selections of my work can be viewed in-person at the Viewpoint Photographic Art Gallery in Sacramento, California. More work is visible here on Artist Presentations or on the web at www.panowest.com.
