About Me

Henry Paine's Artist Statement

Influenced by photographers Edward Weston, Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, I taught myself the Zone System technique that was first developed by Adams. The Zone System helps create the path from the photographer’s vision to the final print. It is a combination of technique and approach; the values of fine art and photographic science support the photographer’s perception of the world in front of the camera.

I find most of my photographic subjects close to home or within a day’s driving distance. I enjoy visiting California’s botanical gardens, where I concentrate on cactus and succulents. I have been photographing the downtown Stockton area since 1999 and now have a large selection of architectural photographs of historic buildings as well as those that have been more recently constructed. Another of my projects includes industrial photographs taken over a period of several years at the Gladding, McBean Company, maker of clay products, in Lincoln, CA.

In addition to developing the ability to visualize a photograph before taking the shot, I have been using computer-generated masks in order to create the final print. This is the only way that I use digital technology in my work. Otherwise, I use 5” x 7” and 6 x 9cm format cameras with black & white film; I develop the film myself in Pyro in my own darkroom. My photographs are silver gelatin, toned in selenium, processed to archival standards, and mounted on acid-free mat board. The entire process from visualization of the composition to framing of the final print is done by myself.

My darkroom and gallery are located at my camera repair business,147 E. Alpine Avenue in Stockton. I welcome visitors. For more information, please visit my web site, www.henrypaine.com, or call me at (209) 942-2821.

I am associated with the Tidewater Art Center and Gallery in Stockton (www.tidewaterartgallery.com ), Appel Gallery in Sacramento (www.appelgallery.com), and Viewpoint Photographic Art Center, also in Sacramento (www.viewpointgallery.org).

My Blog

New Architecture Images

I have updated my Architecture collection. All images in the collection are new to this site. I have also added a two-pixel black border around each image. Any comments pro or con? I will be updating my other collections over the next several days.

Henry, As always excellent images. Really like Church, Lamoille, NV, and Walls, Knights Ferry CA. The borders are a nice touch. Gil

Your Architecture Collection looks great. I particularly like 'Walls, Knights Ferry' and 'Shiloh Church, Montezuma.' I like the look of the two-pixel black border around the images. It gives them a little more separation from the white background without being too noticeable.

Gladding McBean Collection Updated

The Gladding McBean Clay Plant in Lincoln, CA, is an outstanding site where you can find any number of different subjects and lighting situations. Thanks to Gene Kennedy, who manages the Gladding McBean Photography Workshops, we now have access to this location 3 times a year. I've been attending the workshops long enough that I have taken almosst 200 images. I hope you enjoy these that I have just uploaded.
Gladding McBean Collection Updated

The Gladding, McBean Clay Plant - Lincoln, CA

The Gladding, McBean Clay Plant is an extraordinary site to find intriguing subject matter. From plant buildings, extrusion machinery, beehive and shuttle kilns, drying clay products, to details of clay models, some recently made and others perhaps a hundred years old.

Great images of Gladding McBean. My favorites from this collection are "Concrete Wall, Building," "Heating Ducts, Windows," and "Pipes, Kiln Interior."

PLANTS COLLECTION

I have added a new collection: PLANTS. The majority of the images were taken at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino (Pasadena), CA. It's pretty obvious that I have a particular interest in succulents as a photographic subject.

Additions to Architecture Collection

I have added several images to my Architecture collection and would welcome comments on them. These were part of a PowerPoint presentation I made to the Davis Photography Club on Nov. 10.

Great stuff here. The one that really jumps out at me is the Marin County Civic Center. This building has been photographed so often by so many yet I've never seen this particular compelling composition. Major kudos! Thanks for sharing these, Henry!
