About Me
Jim FARIA's Artist Statement
Jim L. FARIA
I’ve been actively involved in photography for over 37 years. Starting in print journalism with a bay area newspaper in 1975, my news experience at crime scenes led to an early career as a CSI with a Bay Area police department. After graduating with a BA in Criminal Justice and a minor in Fine Arts Photography in 1979, a 30-year career in Law Enforcement followed.
I’ve photographed in all film and digital formats from 35mm to 8x10, and have also worked for the last 25 years driving mobile cameras in remote/sports television productions, including the Olympic Games and two tours with the Pope. I’ve received four National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Emmy awards for my work in sports television production between 1993 and 2009.
In my early years, I photographed exclusively in black and white and only with truly available light. Exposures several minutes long lit only from light under a door, were not uncommon. This allowed me to grasp that an image is, in reality, only reflected light affected by the surface reflecting it. Black and white thus allowed me to focus on chasing the light without being distracted by the brilliance of color itself, being the dominant factor in an image.
Having spent so many years in film, the images displayed are never cropped post-capture, and see no significant PhotoShop manipulation. Although I’ve been drawn to traditional landscapes, softly-lit building interiors are where I can usually be found chasing the light.
